Lymphedema Therapy
Lymphedema Therapy focuses on relieving swelling in the extremities by moving lymphatic fluid out of affected limbs. Lymphedema can result from damage or trauma to the lymphatic system or removal of lymph nodes. The lymphatic system is part of the immune system which helps fight off illnesses and infections. When the lymphatic system is damaged or not functioning properly, protein-rich lymphatic fluid can accumulate and multiply in the affected area causing edema. Lymphedema is a chronic progressive condition that continues to worsen when not treated.
Therapy may include:
• Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
• Compression bandaging and/or garments
• Lymphedema exercises
• Skin care
• Education to prevent complications
Benefits:
• Reduce extremity size • Assist in maintaining skin integrity • Decrease pain • Reduce risk of cellulitis, DVT, and other infections • Increase movement and strength • Improve function and quality of life
